'No matter where you hide': US kills al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in drone strike

In one of the biggest elimination of terrorists

President Joe Biden said on Monday that the United States killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in an attack in Afghanistan over the weekend, in one of the largest eliminations of terrorists globally since 2011 Osama bin Laden.

Zawahiri, an Egyptian surgeon with a $25 million bounty on his head, helped coordinate the September 11, 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

Like bin Laden, who studied business and economics administration, and according to some reports, also obtained a degree in civil engineering, his successors were also highly educated. The 71-year-old was a surgeon and served in the Egyptian army for three years.

In 1998, al-Zawahiri founded the Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), which merged with al-Qaeda

US officials said on condition of anonymity that Zawahiri died after a US drone strike in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday at 6.18 am (0148 GMT i.e. 7.18 am IST).

In a White House speech on Monday, President Joe Biden said he authorized a "precision strike" that neutralized al-Zawahiri, an alleged early mentor to Osama bin Laden, who was involved in 9/11 attacks. He was the mastermind of the deadly attacks, which left him paralyzed. America.

Praising the operation in Kabul, Biden expressed hope that the killing of al-Zawahiri would bring "another measure of closure" for the families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the country. Giving details of the successful covert operation, the US President said that intelligence officers tracked al-Zawahri to a house in the city of Kabul, where he was hiding with his family. The operation was carried out on Sunday after Biden authorized the move last week.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement that the attack took place in Kabul on Sunday and Afghanistan's ruling extremists condemned the operation as a violation of "international principles" and the 2020 agreement on the withdrawal of US forces after two decades.
