End of an era: Internet expoloer shuts down today after 27 years , Microsoft bids adieu to the OG browser for good

In less than 24 hours, some 27 years after the company first debuted the browser, Microsoft will retire Internet Explorer. It made its debut in 1995 as the bundled web browser with the Windows 95 operating system for PCs.

Initially, users were asked to pay to get the browser and after a while you got it for free as it became one of the most popular ways of accessing the internet.

Internet Explorer managed to survive until you got better and faster web browsers in the market, and now with the likes of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Safari around, IE just couldn’t compete with the latest avatar of web browser in the market.

It made a habit of giving you updates at a slow pace, riddled with bugs and security issues that made it a developer’s nightmare.

Last May, the company first announced the decision to retire the web browser for certain versions of Windows 10 on June 15, 2022.

Microsoft introduced Edge in 2015 and it has gradually phased out Internet Explorer.

“Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications," the company released in a statement.

The Wall Street Journal reported that as of this month, .28% of people surfing the web still use Internal Explorer, citing web traffic website StatCounter. By comparison, about two-thirds of people use Google Chrome, while 18% use Apple's Safari.

The move drew emotions across various social media platforms Tuesday.
