5million Indian's were displaced due to climate change last year as the country sees rise in natural disaster:UN report

Nearly 50 lakh people in India were internally displaced due to climate change and disasters in 2021, news agency PTI quoted the annual Global Trends Report by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

The UNHCR report states that 10 crore people across the world were forced to flee their homes last year due to violence, food insecurity, human rights abuses, the climate crisis, war in Ukraine etc.

"The largest displacements in the context of disasters in 2021 occurred in China (6.0 million), the Philippines (5.7 million), and India (4.9 million). Most disaster displacements during the year were temporary," the report said.

India is one of the countries that are highly vulnerable to climate change with 80 percent of the population living in districts that are highly vulnerable to extreme hydro-met disasters.

The agency further reported that the number of people, who were forced to flee their homes increased every year over the past decade and touched its peak this year. The report, which records data for the period of January 2021 to December 2021, also notes that the developments of 2022 are 'impossible to ignore', especially in light of the Russia-Ukraine war that started in February this year.

Interestingly, 1.4 million new claims were submitted by asylum seekers across various countries in the year 2021. Of these, the US received the maximum number of asylum requests - 188,900, followed by Germany - 148,200, Mexico - 132,700, Costa Rica - 108,500 and France - 90,200. "Every year of the last decade, the numbers (of displaced people) have climbed"

The UN Agency stated that every year, the number of people forced to flee their homes has increased over the past decade, and it is now at an all-time high. A push towards peacemaking can only reverse this.
