Sikhs gather at golden temple, demand khalistan while brandishing swords on 38th anniversary of operation Blue Star

Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised by supporters of radical Sikh outfits as well as that of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) at the Golden Temple on the 38th anniversary of Operation Bluestar.

The marbled premises of the Golden Temple near Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, echoed with pro-Khalistan slogans.

Many youths held banners and placards with ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ written on them. They wore t-shirts with the picture of slain separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale printed on them.

Section 144 has been imposed around the Golden Temple around the shrine and carrying of any kind of weapon has been prohibited but despite that over a hundred men gathered outside after the morning prayer meeting.

It is being reported that Takht Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh compared the then Indian government with the Mughals and soon after pro-Bindranwale and Khalistan slogans were raised. The religious leader even accused Former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru of framing an anti-Sikh policy which was later executed in June 84.

According to PTI reports Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday paid obeisance at the Golden Temple and held a closed-door meeting with Akal Takht Jathedar Gyani Harpreet Singh ahead of the Operation Bluestar anniversary. However, what transpired at the meeting was not shared by the chief minister with the media when he came out of the residence of the Jathedar.

Recently, A copy of the Guru Granth Sahib which was hit by a bullet during Operation Bluestar in 1984 was also put on display by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee at the Golden Temple for four days from Thursday.

Operation Bluestar was carried out in June 1984 by the Army to flush out militants from the temple complex. The copy of the holy Sikh book was installed in the Golden Temple during the operation.
