New novel 'Langya' virus hits China: Has no vaccine or treatment, difficult to detect & causes Liver & Kidney failure It belongs to the family of Nipah virus, that kills 75% of humans

At a time when the world was getting back to normal and as if the effects of covid were not enough, news of the new deadly virus has surfaced recently. The first monkeypox and now the latest entrant henipavirus – known as the 'Langya' henipavirus (LYV), have caused concern.

The Langya virus has soo far infected 35 people in China's Henan and Shandong provinces. The virus itself is another type of zoonotic disease which is an infectious disease transmitted mainly from a vertebrate animal to humans such as the Wuhan virus where bats reportedly played a role. Interestingly, langya was found in dogs as well as in goats.

The shocking thing is this virus is part of the same family, which includes the deadly Nipah virus. The virus family is known to kill three-quarters of people who have contracted any virus from the family, in case of severe infection. Fortunately, no new cases have resulted in deaths so far, with only flu-like symptoms in patients suffering from mild forms.

Currently, no vaccine or treatment exists for the Langya virus and the only solution to reduce complications is palliative or supportive care.

Surprisingly, the first case of Langya virus was observed in humans in 2019, with the majority of cases reported in 2022. The virus was obtained from taking throat samples from febrile patients, as the most common symptom of the virus was found by researchers. Fever is followed by a feeling of cough, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle pain, headache and nausea. Diagnostically, a person can see liver and kidney failure as well as a decrease in white blood cells and platelet count.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is trying to establish clarity on whether human-to-human transmission of the virus is possible as a case of this nature has yet to be reported and people have not seen their eyes. And also warned to keep the ears open. To know more about further findings of the virus
